It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant). The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world.

Side Effects Nausea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, or headache may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember. Refer to the Plaquenil drug label for specific limitations of use for the treatment of malaria. • Plaquenil is also indicated for the treatment of chronic discoid lupus erythematosus and systemic lupus erythematosus in adults, and for the treatment of acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis in adults. It might be a bit of heartburn or gastritis. Make sure though to wait 2 hrs before and 2hrs after taking the plaquenil to take an antacid.

This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.

Hi everyone. I posted here a few days ago because I was about to start taking Plaquenil. So far it’s been okay, no major side effects. Except today I started having some heartburn after taking it. It says on the bottle I can’t take an antacid for at least four hours after taking the Plaquenil. Feb 19, 2020 Avoid taking an antacid or Kaopectate kaolin-pectin within 4 hours before or after you take hydroxychloroquine. Some antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb hydroxychloroquine. What other drugs will affect hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, Plaquenil Sulfate, Quineprox? Administer hydroxychloroquine and antacids at least 4 hours apart. Of note, a study demonstrated no significant difference in hydroxychloroquine serum concentration in patients taking concomitant antacids n = 14 compared to those not taking antacids n = 495. Apomorphine Major Avoid coadministration of hydroxychloroquine and apomorphine.
