    Plaquenil sulfa drug

I read that the sulfa in Plaquenil is different from those in antibiotics and most people with Lupus have an allergy to Sulfa but can take Plaquenil without any problems. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Whether you try Plaquenil or not is ultimately up to you and your doctor, but a lot will depend on the type and severity of reactions that you've had.

Hydroxychloroquine sulfate Plaquenil is not a sulfa drug. That is a misconception. However, hydroxychloroquine can be associated with serious dermatological side effects including severe rashes. Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in water to at least 20 percent; chemically the drug is 2-4-7-Chloro-4-quinolylaminopentylethylamino ethanol sulfate 11. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets contain 200 mg hydroxychloroquine sulfate, equivalent to 155 mg base, and are for oral administration. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets is indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and discoid and systemic lupus erythematosus, in patients who have not responded satisfactorily to drugs with less potential for serious side effects.

My reaction to sulfa consisted of wheezing, but no major distress, and Plaquenil was sufficiently different from Gantrisin that my doctor felt comfortable with prescribing it. Rashes are certainly a lot less severe than respiratory reactions.

Hydroxychloroquine sulfate Plaquenil is not a sulfa drug. That is a misconception. However, hydroxychloroquine can be associated with serious dermatological side effects including severe rashes and exacerbation of psoriasis. I can't take sulfa drugs so I haven't researched Azulfidene as much as the others, but it seems to be somewhat less commonly used in this community than Plaquenil and Methotrexate. I was started on Plaquenil two months ago and have had zero side effects beyond the very first dose.
