    Allergic to plaquenil lupus

It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant). The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world.

So after three weeks of taking Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine I developed a rash and had to stop. Now I'm really worried since Plaquenil is supposed to be the 'life insurance' drug of lupus, people have less flares on it, live longer, etc. These medications may also prevent lupus from spreading to certain organs, such as the kidney and central nervous system your brain and spinal cord and may help to reduce flares by as much as 50%. Plaquenil and other anti-malarials are the key to controlling lupus long term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. I was dx in August with Lupus and my Rheumy said she was afraid to start me on Plaquenil since I had a bad reaction to a Sulfa antibiotic I took and the same reaction when a Dr gave me Lasix. I read that the sulfa in Plaquenil is different from those in antibiotics and most people with Lupus have an allergy to Sulfa but can take Plaquenil.

This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.

I got in touch with my rheumatologist she said the only way to know is stop the plaquenil for at least a week.was 10 days ago and it hasn’t stopped. I also get like hives and red spots that just appear so I’m thinking it’s more the lupus not the plaquenil. Dry red scaly patches too. My legs itch too but more my arms and shoulders. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching /swelling especially. Hydroxychloroquine sulfate Plaquenil is not a sulfa drug. That is a misconception. However, hydroxychloroquine can be associated with serious dermatological side effects including severe rashes and exacerbation of psoriasis.

What is the shortest amount of time that it takes for. Aug 11, 2019 If you are an active lupus flare, you will need to take prednisone and/or an NSAID to bridge the gap until Plaquenil begins to work. The normal range of time that it takes to work is between 1–3 months most people say 60 days Personally, I feel relief after about 14 days and then no additional improvements until the three month mark.
